Dear Parent, Students and Teachers:

A bill was passed in May of 2017 allowing students to self-carry and apply over-the- counter sunscreen. The sunscreen must be FDA approved. However, if your child requires a teacher or employee to assist them with this application, a Parent Authorization Form must be filled out and submitted to the nurse. According to the Centers for Disease Control, children should apply sunscreen 30 minutes before going outdoors. The use of sun block can lessen exposure to ultraviolet radiation from the sun's rays, the most common cause of melanoma, a type of skin cancer. Melanoma is the most common type of skin cancer in children, encompassing about 7 percent of all cancers in children ages 15 to 19.
